Abortion

Back to Q & A

Is abortion ever okay?

The debate about abortion has been hijacked by those who don't want to discuss the real issue.   The debate about abortion should center around human life.  The question is, "Is the fetus a living human being?"  If the answer is yes, the fetus is human life, then the debate is about human rights not special circumstance like, rape or incest.    When those who want to justify abortion talk of women's rights, they change the debate to an absurd distraction.  This is effective in debate, but begs the real question of the contents of the womb.

Because the fetus is a human being, the question of morality and ethics of abortion centers on a life-for-life analysis.  If the life of the mother is truly threatened we have a life-for-life choice.  If the "health" of the mother is threatened we have a life-for-health issue.  Ethically, we cannot compare quality of life for sanctity of life.  The only time that an abortion should be considered is in this life or death situation of the mother, and then we must consider the life of the child in this decision.

How should Christians address abortion socially/politically?

Many Christians are understandably angry about abortion in America.  However, if we want to truly have inroads into the hearts of women considering abortion we need to educate, not inflame, an already emotive debate with rhetoric that is offensive.  In my 30's I became so offended by abortion in America that I felt compelled to actively block clinics with Operation Rescue.  I found myself becoming fanatical and imbalanced.  It occurred to me that even though the mission of Operation Rescue was noble and I supported their right to civil disobedience for the purpose of protecting life, I personally needed to be more positive in educational opportunities.  I have for many years now changed my approach to a positive educational model.

I believe that it is reasonable to be in civil disobedience for the purpose of protecting life.   However, I see a limited impact.  I think we must continually make the debate about life and not politics.  If there is ever a change in this country it will not be through the political process or the Supreme Court, but through education on modern understanding of fetal development.  I would encourage you to study the science and share it with those in your influence.  Educate yourself, do the research defend our creators authority.

How can Christians minister to those who have had abortions?

Christians will never be successful in ministering to the world by using emotive terms like "murder" and "sinners."  Whereas these terms are accurate, it would be more helpful for ministries of love to develop in the church by women who have been through an abortion and have found the forgiveness of God for that decision.

The ministry of forgiveness will send a message of hope to those who are living with incredible shame and hopelessness.  Let's send the right message to the world.
