Knowing the Will of God

Maybe the question should be, "Can I know with certainty the one I marry is God's one for me?" Trying to find God's perfect person for you would be very "man centered" if you were to make it your search. What we should do is apply wisdom to our decision about marriage. We should follow the directive of Scripture and avoid being unequally yoked. 2 Cor. 6:14 "be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness?" If this doesn't apply to marriage, I don't know where it would apply. Choose someone committed to both the Lord and the marriage. The problem with dating is that it can be so emotional and subjective. Keep in mind this crucial decision should be as rational and objective as possible. Don't throw wisdom out of the door because you are "in love." Look for someone with whom you share the same values and character.

God's will for you is to follow His Word; after you have a submissive heart to God's Word you can make a wise decision about marriage. Don't marry just for love...marry for God's honor. That is not to say, you should not love the one you marry. However, you should go beyond emotion and analyze objectively the decision. Once you are married, accept (and love) the deficiencies of your spouse and serve her/him with all your heart.

If I miss the will of God today, won't I miss the will of God from now on?

This is not how God works. He is leading you through His sovereignty and purpose. You will make mistakes and fail, but God will use even this for His glory. What we must do is take today embrace it with wise decision making and God will direct you and accomplish His ultimate glory in and through your life.

How do I find God's will for my life?

In the traditional view of finding God's will there are three categories: 1. The sovereign will of God; 2. The moral will of God; and 3. The specific or personal will of God. This traditional view holds that the specific will of God is knowable. My view is that we cannot always know the sovereign will of God or His specific will for us. What we must do is discover the moral will of God. i.e. His revelation for how all believers should conduct their lives. Then we can apply wisdom to our decision making.

Some people are convinced they must find God's will for everything in their life and needlessly stress over each detail. I am not suggesting that God doesn't care about the small things. No, in fact, I think He cares greatly and He acts in His sovereignty to bring about His purpose in each believer's life. We should not get caught up in the process and set aside wise decision making principles to find God's specific will for our life. We should look at each decision with wise analysis Trust that God will complete His perfect will in your life. Submit to the Word of God, trust Him for His promises to be fulfilled in your life and be wise.
